The Kaiserslautern Zoo was founded in 1968 as the Siegelbach Animal Park. The zoo was home to approxi-mately 40 mammals, including a lion and a chimpanzee. In 1980, Siberian Amur tigers were introduced, and they featured prominently in the zoo’s logo for many years. In 2003, Zoo-GmbH was founded, bringing with it modern facilities for the animal park as well as the current name “Kaisers-lautern Zoo.” In 2014, a new concept for the zoo was developed under the motto “Animals Up Close,” which includes walk-through areas and new, large enclosures.

Opened in 1970, the wildlife park covers an area of about 25 hectares and is home to approximately 90 wild animals of various species. In addition to various species native to the Palatinate Forest, such as red deer and wild boar, the park is also

home to bison, for example.

Near Maßweiler in the southwestern Palatinate lies a former U.S. military base that has been repurposed in recent years to offer injured or orphaned native animals – as well as rescued exotic animals – a second chance at life. The animals are cared for there and, if possible, released back into the wild. In addition, the site features an underground bunker complex that, since 2019, has housed an exhibition on the theme of “Animals in War” that is unique in Germany.
