About the West Palatinate Region
The West Palatinate Region is located in southwestern Germany between the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar metropolitan regions, the Saarland, and France.
It comprises the independent cities of Kaiserslautern, Pirmasens, and Zweibrücken, as well as the districts of Donnersberg, Kaiserslautern, Kusel, and Southwest Palatinate. With an area larger than that of Saarland, the region is home to approximately 527,000 residents.

By far the largest city and the regional center is Kaiserslautern, with around 100,000 residents, followed by Pirmasens (approx. 40,000 residents) and Zweibrücken (approx. 34,000 residents). A distinctive feature of the region is the more than 50,000 U.S. citizens and NATO personnel living there, who are not included in the official population figures. They make the greater Kaiserslautern area (the Kaiserslautern Military Community, KMC) the largest U.S. community outside the United States and, after decades of presence, one of the most English-speaking regions in Germany.

The three largest cities are also the region’s most important economic and cultural hubs. In addition to the majority of businesses, the region is home to two universities as well as numerous research institutes and administrative agencies. Outside the cities, you also frequently encounter “hidden champions” and major employers.
Outside the three largest cities, the West Palatinate has a predominant-ly rural character. Here, the region captivates visitors with its scenic beauty and proximity to nature. In the north and west of the region, forests and meadows alternate across rolling terrain. In the east, the Palatinate Forest dominates with its seemingly endless expanse.

The West Palatinate has a rich and eventful history. Numerous castles still bear witness to a time when the region was fiercely contested and strong defenses were essential. The legacy of industrialization is still clearly visible, especially in the cities. The military, stationed in the (border) region for decades, has also left its mark. In recent years, positive steps toward a successful future have been taken on industrial brownfields and former barracks sites.
